This year the children’s author, illustrator and artist Tomie dePaola died. He was 85. His official website carries tributes that enable us to revisit the breadth of his output. There is a brief obituary.
Each Christmas I get out Tomie’s collection of memories published in 2006, Christmas Remembered. Fifteen stories of how Tomie spent some of his Christmases – from childhood to decades later, in different cities and places, with friends many or few, one time in a monastery. Sometimes Christmas on a lavish scale, in restful years trimmed down because enough can be enough. Tomie’s memories whisper to us that perfect takes many forms.
